OKDict

The OKDict extension for OpenOffice enables you to look up word definitions on the Internet. The protocol used to retrieve the definitions is the DICT protocol. You can use OKDict with the main applications of the OpenOffice software suite, such as Writer, Writer/Web, Calc, Draw and Impress.

With OKDict, you can very easily look up the definition of a word in a document. Just select the word (or right-click the word in a Writer document) and choose Define from the context menu. The definition is displayed in the dictionary browser.

The dictionary browser works like a web browser: it has an input field, where you can enter a word to define, and a definition area, where the definitions are displayed. If you select a word in the definition area, its definition will be automatically retrieved and displayed. You can go back and forward in the search history.

OKDict can be configured with the OpenOffice options dialog. The OKDict options dialog can be accessed from Tools - Options - Language Settings - OKDict.

The OKDict user manual is integrated in the OpenOffice user manual. It can be accessed from the Contents tab in the OpenOffice user manual.

Please bear in mind that the results you get depend on the server you use. There is a list of servers you can use if the default server doesn't suit your needs.

Warning: after installing OKDict, you have to stop the Quickstarter and to restart OpenOffice before you can use the extension.

After installing OKDict, you have to stop the Quickstarter and to restart OpenOffice before you can use the extension.

Bugs

• The title of the dictionary window isn't displayed (OpenOffice bug)
• The characters entered in the input field of the dictionary window are completed automatically with previously searched words; this feature can't be disabled (OpenOffice bug)
• OKDict doesn't work correctly with read-only documents (especially Writer documents) (OpenOffice bug)
